Why are we campaigning?

We are a group from Llanrwst and the wider Conwy Valley area, who are against the proposal of a new supermarket in Llanrwst. We have formed the group to raise awareness within Llanrwst and the wider community as to why a Tesco Supermarket, or any new supermarket, in the town would have negative effects on businesses, the town and community.

History

In February 2012, a public meeting was held in the Eagles Hotel, Llanrwst. The meeting was held due to a leaked document which stated details of discussions between Conwy County Council and the Consolidated Property Group (CPG), a representative for Tesco.

The meeting was filmed and can be viewed here:

- Tesco are seeking planning permission to build a 28,000 square foot Supermarket in Llanrwst, on the Plas yn Dre site. This is larger than the combined floor space of all the shops in Llanrwst!

- An additional 43 car park spaces for Glasdir (thereby totally 91) were suggested in the proposal. However, this would require that the town Library and Police Station be demolished! The Council would then seek funding of £1/2 million tax payers money to build a new library and police station.

- The new library and police station would be built at the Dolanog site.

- Conwy County Council want to build a waste transfer station in Llanrwst on Betws Road.

- The leaked document states Tesco will pay £3.6 million to build a new supermarket and build the waste transfer station.

All of this discussion had taken place privately, without consulting the people of Llanrwst and the surrounding areas.

Since the meeting in February:

- Questionnaires have been sent out to businesses and individuals within the town and wider area. The majority of these have shown opposition to any new supermarket.

- The Llanrwst Vision report results have shown that 9 out of 10 businesses in Llanrwst are opposed to any new supermarket in Llanrwst.

We ask for your support in this campaign and hope that the town and wider area can unite in opposing any new supermarket in Llanrwst.
